I’m Michael Haugh, Owner and Trainer at Bootheel CrossFit. I moved to this area in 2007 after living in the Kennett, MO/Paragould, AR area for about 12 years.

I have been reasonably athletic throughout my life. I played basketball as a teenager, and tried to maintain my fitness into my adulthood by finding active hobbies such as mountain biking and lifting weights in the gym. But I really let myself go from 2008 to 2010 when I got promoted to management at a local retail store. I stopped exercising and my diet consisted mostly of sugary, greasy, and chemically processed fast food. I quickly became the standard American couch potato.

My wake-up call came in January of 2010 when I was diagnosed with cancer in the lymph nodes of my neck. After surgery and a brief period of radiation therapy, I cleaned up my diet and reclaimed responsibility for my health and fitness. I canceled my globo gym membership that I had been paying for (and never used) since 2008, and started doing “military style” workouts, cycling, P90X, and even tried out rugby at Southeast Missouri State University.

I had my own workout program that I would stick to, so I attracted a few friends and co-workers that I was able to help coach towards becoming stronger, fitter, and more capable individuals.

Then I met Charles Williams and Myka Dockins as they were opening Muddy Water CrossFit in Cape Girardeau. I came in to try my first workout, and I was hooked. Not only did I like the structure of the program, but also I really came to appreciate the Community that is built around it and the support and accountability that it provides. Although I was in the best shape of my life so far, CrossFit quickly showed me my imbalances and weaknesses, and just as quickly showed me how to fix them.

I have gained more strength and mobility than I have ever had, and I no longer experience any type of joint pain or overuse injuries that I had before, because CrossFit develops FUNCTIONAL fitness and strength. Not only that, but I have met some of my best friends through CrossFit. I’ve met like-minded individuals who take responsibility for their fitness and well-being, and it’s been a great influence in my life.

After earning my Level One Trainer Certification I revived my passion for helping others by working as a trainer at Muddy Water CrossFit. I’m excited about bringing CrossFit to the Sikeston community so that others can improve their own lives the way that it has improved mine.
